SPINCAM and Ocean Teacher (IOC-UNESCO/IODE) organize the Training Course on E-repositories in Guayaquil (Ecuador), 26-30 May 2014

The SPINCAM project (Southeast Pacific Data and Information Network in Support to Integrated Coastal Area Management) was designed to establish an integrated coastal area management (ICAM) indicator framework at national and regional level in the countries of the Southeast Pacific region (Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Peru) focusing on the state of the coastal and marine environment and socio-economic conditions, to provide stakeholders with information and atlases on the sustainability of existing and future coastal management practices and development.

One of the priority areas for training for SPINCAM members is the development and maintenance of e-repositories for each country participating in the project. This course aims at addressing these training needs and will focus on the practical use of repositories

SPINCAM participates at final conference of the European Research Project PEGASO in Antalya (Turkey), 14-17 January 2014


Dr. Fernando Félix (CPPS), Dr. Paula Cristina Sierra and Dr. Francisco Arias-Isaza (INVEMAR Colombia) have participated on behalf of SPINCAM at the Final Conference of the European Research Project PEGASO providing a very extensive overview of our common work, coordination, main products and linkages with other regional initiatives in Latin America and the Caribbean. Additionally, Julian Barbière (IOC-UNESCO) has also provided a genereal overview of the project coordination as well as how we have used the lessons learnt from PEGASO in the context of SPINCAM (Spatial Data Infrastructures, indicators as a tool for management and the cartographic analysis of cumulative human impacts, among others)

SPINCAM participates at the Caribbean Marine Atlas Meeting in Miami (United States), 10-13 December 2013

Dr. Fernando Félix (CPPS), Dr. Francisco Arias-Isaza, Dr. Paula Cristina Sierra (INVEMAR, Colombia) and Rozío Ramirez (ARAP, Panama) participated at the Caribbean Marine Atlas Meeting in Miami. A general presentation of SPINCAM Project was presented to all participants, as well as the activities of INVEMAR in terms of data management and decision support systems for coastal and marine planning and management in Colombia, as an example of good practices in the region.

Training on the Ocean Data Portal, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 15-16 October 2013

SPINCAM National experts, representatives of the National Oceanographic Data Centers and the CPPS participated in this training organized by IODE-ODINCARSA in close cooperation with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation of the Argentine Republic. The training course was provided by Dr. Sergey Below and Dr. Sergey Sukhonosov from the Russian National Oceanographic Data Center and the Russian Research Institute for Hydrometeorological Information - World Data Center in Obninsk, Kaluga, Russian Federation.

Inception Meeting of the SPINCAM II Project in Santiago de Chile, Chile, 5-6 November 2012. 

The Inception Meeting of SPINCAM II will be the occasion to reach a common understanding of the project objectives and to provide inputs and finalise the project workplans  and budget for the next three years. It is expected that the National SPINCAM Focal points, Technical Focal points and IODE Focal points will present the project coordination mechanism to be put in place in each country. The plenary will also be the occasion to report and demonstrate the outcomes of the first phase and to discuss weaknesses that needs to be addressed in the second phase. Recommendations emerging from the Inception meeting will be reviewed and endorsed by the Steering Committee meeting, which will take place on the 7th November 2012.

SPINCAM Conference in Lima, Perú, 31 May 2012


The SPINCAM CONFERENCE took place the 31st May in Lima (Peru) with the aim to establish a regional dialog with decision-makers about how to strengthen the collaboration and investment in marine-coastal systems in support of national and regional policies and to remark the project contribution to coastal area management at both national and regional level (Report in English, in Spanish). The Steering Committee met on the 1st of June to plan the second phase of the project! IV SPINCAM Committee and the Regional Technical Meeting to evaluate the results and planning on future steps

SPINCAM Regional Workshop on METADATA

The objective of this regional workshop is to adopt a unified metadata structure and standard paramaters compatible with international regulations took place 1-3 March 2011 in Guayaquil (Ecuador). The objectives of the meeting were:

1. Selection of the unified metadata structure based on the metadata profile of the regional indicators according to standards


2. Selection of the appropriate data sets to develop the Regional Atlas

The 3rd Steering Meeting SPINCAM took place 9-10 November 2010 in Santa Marta, Colombia.

The 1st SPINCAM Regional Technical Workshop was held the 20-21 October 2009 in Lima (Perú) to evaluate a set of regional indicators. You can find the report (2251 Kb) in Spanish. During the workshop 5 regional indicators were agreed:

    • Population dynamics
    • Planning tools and marine-coastal management for integrated coastal zone management
    • Water Quality
    • Biodiversity



II Steering Committee Meeting of SPINCAM

It took place the 22 October after the 1st SPINCAM Technical Regional Meeting. Taking into account the outputs of the regional workshop, the activities, timeline and budget of the different Work Packages were updated. New activties were defined for WP2 (Information and Data Management) and the timeline was adjusted considering the possibilities of each country. Trainning courses were planned in addition to new regional workshops (for more details see the "Work Packages" section ).
